El tomar la decisión de volver a estudiar, luego de una licenciatura como Comunicación Social, es algo que no deviene fácilmente; fueron meses intentando entenderme, encontrarme, pensando en mi existencia, en qué hacer cuando alcanzas el límite luego de 8 años enseñando inglés.

La arquitectura. Un sueño desde niña. El construir torres y templos de legos, preguntándome mientras escribo de dónde saqué ese nivel de creatividad a tan solo cuatro o cinco años de edad, quizá un poco menos.

Tomar una decisión tan grande. Volver a estudiar, cuando estás casi en los 30. 28 años que me parecen no perdidos, pero quizá un poco mal gastados, o quizá soy yo pensando, perdida en pensamientos, o simplemente yo, en un modo de, a ti lector, hacerte parte de mi mente, parte de este sentir.

Por una vez, sentí que todo cobraba sentido, luego de 10 años donde me perdí entre Ingeniería Informática, donde entrar a Arquitectura era una mafia en su momento, donde tenías que pagar por un cupo, donde al final me decanté y encontré mi lugar en Comunicación; un lugar entre las letras, entre la tinta. Un lugar que me enseñó a escribir, a plasmar sentimientos en palabras, a investigar, y a muchas cosas más. Pero que me enseñó a pensar, a luchar, a indagar y a cuestionar lo que estaba mal. A discutir, pero siempre con bases, nunca mintiendo, con mi ética y moral por delante.

Una carrera dedicada a la enseñanza de un idioma que abre puertas, pero que para mí, se sentía sin sentido. Lo disfruté, sí, en su momento. Pero luego me hice a la idea de que la vida no es como se quisiera, no para mí. Me dije que quizá la Arquitectura no era para mí, no por ahora, quizá más adelante, en otro tiempo quizá. Y así pasaron 10 años donde mi identidad se quebró, tanto a nivel personal como laboral. Donde me cuestioné, donde hice un curso de marketing de contenidos y no me quedé en teoría, sino que decidí practicar, lanzarme al vacío.

Lo que comenzó como una aventura hacia lo desconocido, me llevó a transitar varios caminos. Si has leído mis primeros escritos, podrás ir sintiendo el cambio, los matices, los colores, la inseguridad, el miedo en cada palabra plasmada. Incluso pensé en irme a Tailandia, en encontrar un trabajo online y escribir para estudios de arquitectura. Mi sueño de hacer dinero y pagarme mis estudios allá.

Hasta que mi madre plantó en mí la idea de estudiar acá, en la misma universidad donde estudiaron varias primas. Y pensé, me cuestioné nuevamente. Y pensé. Pensé en que nunca había creído posible el poder estudiar la carrera de mis sueños. Un sueño que solo era capaz de tocar y hacer realidad a través de escritos, a través de artículos, a través de espacios ajenos a mí, creando emociones y sensaciones a un lector vacío, a un lector en silencio.

Y logré inscribirme, con ayuda de mi padre. Porque para nadie es un secreto que conseguir trabajo en Venezuela no es fácil, incluso online; menos cuando te dedicas a escribir, incluso cuando mencionas que estudias. Es como si tener una vida fuera un impedimento. Buscan esclavos. Lo que yo me atrevo a llamar esclavitud moderna. Donde te exigen y te pagan una miseria.

No me quedé en los laureles, pues decidí investigar sobre mi carrera soñada, no quería llegar perdida a las aulas, quería entender todo lo posible. Y así comenzó mi viaje, mi aventura. A pesar de la inseguridad, a pesar del miedo ante lo nuevo, ante un nuevo comienzo, sintiendo que cerraba un ciclo de 10 años. Donde hubo dolor, donde hubo sufrimiento. Y quizá te puedas preguntar: ¿Qué clase de dolor? El dolor de una salida del clóset forzada, de sentir cómo decepcionas a tus padres, donde sientes que te arrancan tantas cosas, el dolor de vivir en un país que pasó por guarimbas, censura en todos los sentidos, dolor por sentir que creciste de golpe, de repente, donde sientes que quemaste diversas etapas y donde quedaron tantas cosas sin sanar.

Me aventuré, me preparé; vi charlas, documentales, y me enamoré de la historia, de los términos, de las texturas, de los materiales, de los colores, de la arquitectura y de la vida. Incluso acepté un pensum de 2011. En su momento lo vi de colores. Pienso yo que en mi enamoramiento, me cegué. Considero que es normal. Y comenzó la semana de los cursos preuniversitarios - que para ser honesta, sólo disfruté el abrebocas de Taller de Diseño, donde entendí que es Arquitectura era para mí, donde me enamoré de las medidas, de dibujar, de entender, de soñar, de saber que algún día podría diseñar el hogar de alguien más, de dar vida a sus ideas, a sus sueños; como una maga, como una diosa.

Incluso disfruté el atisbo de Orientación. Sentí que había encontrado mi sitio, mi lugar en el mundo. Luego de haber estado en un limbo, en un mundo donde no pertenecía, donde no encajaba, donde brincaba de trabajo en trabajo, donde sentía que no lograba nada, a pesar de mi licenciatura, a pesar de mis habilidades. Incluso me aventuré a conocer a los profesores, a sacarle conversación al personal de la universidad. Aproveché cada momento, incluso logré que me instalaran programas necesarios para desarrollar mis habilidades de creación y diseño. Una estudiante de 28 años de edad adelantada, quizá “aventajada”.

Pero pronto caí en un estado de frenesí, donde casi me quemaba, donde casi me quemaba. Y decidí parar. Decidí dejar de escribir, dejar de publicar, dejar de hacer conexiones en LinkedIn. Y eso sería quizá uno o dos meses antes de comenzar oficialmente las clases. Decidí respirar, decidí descansar, decidí parar de trabajar de manera gratis, por amor al arte. Me enfoqué en jugar como cuando hacía en mis años de juventud, como hacía en mi adolescencia, en mi niñez.

Y pronto comenzaron las clases. Llegué con esperanzas, con expectativas. Pero pronto choqué contra un muro, alto, de concreto. El primer choque fue con los asientos, pupitres anclados en el tiempo, y pensé en mejorar, pensé en que sería increíble poder mejorar todo, el mobiliario, las instalaciones, y me animé, a seguir, a aprender. Pero creo que el choque más grande fue con Taller de Diseño I. La materia clave de mi carrera; rodeada de materias que me atrevo a llamar “relleno”. Y el choque más grande y turbulento fue con el profesor.

No es que todo sea color rosa. Al principio pensé que sería increíble tener a un profesor que diera la materia diferente, pero no fue así. No cuando comenzó a brincar de un tema a otro, cuando comenzó a saltar teoría y que comenzó a pedir materiales y maquetas cuando en un primer semestre no ves maquetería, sino hasta el segundo semestre, una vez dominas ciertas bases. Eso sin incluir ciertos comentarios que aquí no caben y que ya me he cansado de contar y de explicar. Comentarios que van desde hacer alusiones a ciertas sustancias, degradaciones por considerarme falta de conocimiento, críticas y comparaciones. Y sé que puedes pensar que eso forma carácter. Otros pueden decir que arquitectura es así.

Un problema que quizá se pudo solucionar hablando -como buena comunicadora que soy. No incluyamos que desde que comencé, no pararon los comentarios de aún estar a tiempo de salirte, de que Arquitectura es demandante, de que no es para todos. Como si hubiera decidido abrir una puerta al Inframundo y meterme por mero gusto. Me enfrenté a un sistema que protege la mediocridad, a un sistema que te pide que te achiques, que te adaptes, que ignores, o que dejes de ver la materia y esperes otro semestre. Y me negué. No entiendo si soy yo, si tengo un problema. Pero me niego a adaptarme. Y duele. Duele el priorizarte. Duele sentir cómo en casi 3 semanas te quemas, te hundes, cómo materias que nada que ver, te consumen más rápido que el mismo taller. Duele el sentirte fuera de lugar.

Y esta es una oda, a mí, al miedo, al cambio, al miedo, a lo que no he sido, a lo que no fui, a lo que puedo ser y a lo que seré. Con inseguridad, con miedo. Porque se siente como si mi torre de legos -el como veo mi vida, hubiera sido desruída, esparcida, y me costara comenzar de cero, reuniendo cada lego, cada pieza. Tratando de no ceder ante la presión, ante el miedo, ante el vacío. Tratando de salir del hueco.

Sí, sé que puedo. Y es por ello que hoy escribo esto. Es por ello que quizá hoy leas esto.

Un intento de historia, de desahogo. Que no sé si tenga sentido. Pero para mí, es como retomar mi estilo, tocar mis raíces, mis comienzos, mi control, mi vida. Y espero que te sirva tanto como a mí.

Have you ever stopped to observe your city? To really pay attention — to close your eyes for a few seconds, feel the breeze, look at the houses, the streets, the buildings?

Today, I will take you through the streets of Barcelona, Anzoátegui, Venezuela, and tell you about three places that deeply capture my attention: the Casa Fuerte, the Ermita del Carmen, and the Teatro Cajigal.

These are three places that, in my opinion, are emblematic. They hold stories, tragedies, moments, memories from the 18th and 19th centuries. And no, this is not an article or a chronicle where I will speak strictly about history. It is a journey where you will see through my eyes, where you will feel the spaces, and very likely experience the magic of Barcelona’s streets.

When we walk through the city, we rarely pay attention to our surroundings. We are so focused on our own world — on our phones, on our problems, or simply on getting to our destination.

This used to happen to me all the time. Until I decided to study architecture and, interestingly, during one of my trips to the gym — which is located in downtown Barcelona — I began paying attention to what surrounded me: from getting into the carrito to pausing to observe what was happening around me.

Once I truly started observing, everything changed. But it wasn’t a sudden shift; it was something that gradually took shape. My vision was slowly transforming. As I went deeper into my architecture studies, I became more aware of what was happening — of the buildings, the houses, the streets.

As the days passed and I continued going to the gym, there was one place that kept catching my attention, but I did not dare to stop. A place people usually see from afar; sometimes they even walk right past it and simply say it is a place of tragedy, a cemetery.

I had actually become one of those people. I never truly stopped to think, to observe, to look beyond the surface. But the change came. I began by walking as close as possible; I would slow down or pause, observing from the outside, but I would not go in. Until one day, I approached and asked about it, and I discovered they offered guided tours where they shared its history.

However, I did not dare to take the tour right away. I felt it wasn’t the moment. I wanted to take my time to explore it, to listen to the voices of the people inside. But before I tell you more, let me share a little about this place that feels so imposing from my perspective.

The place that is our first stop on this adventure through my city: the Casa Fuerte.

Before being known by this name, it began as an 18th-century Franciscan convent. During the Venezuelan War of Independence, the Liberator Simón Bolívar designated it as a center of operations and ordered it to be fortified, thus giving it the name Casa Fuerte.

On April 7, 1817, the “Hecatombe de la Casa Fuerte” took place: an attack in which approximately 3,500 people perished, according to local chronicles — 1,600 according to official records — among them women, children, and the elderly.

A brief summary of everything that happened within and beyond those walls. My mind cannot fathom such tragedy; the feeling of the souls who gave their lives defending the convent.

And it is quite striking that, once you enter, you are overtaken by a sense of peace and silence, where the only sounds are birds and the breeze moving through the trees. It is as if everything outside this place disappears, with the noise of the city fading into the distance.

You may wonder how it is possible to feel all this. It wasn’t long after I asked about the tours that I finally dared to enter. The shift in atmosphere was undeniable. There is a sense of tranquility, and at the same time, you can almost feel the voices of the souls that remain in this place.

It is being able to see the walls, the ground, the chapel where Mass was held, the room where Simón Bolívar wrote his letters, the place where Eulalia Buroz was shot.

A place that often goes unnoticed — where, outside, pedestrians and street vendors seek refuge from the relentless sun — and inside lie ruins, history, broken walls, tragedy. Yet once you are inside, you feel calm. And when the tour ends, you do not want to leave — at least, that is how it was for me.

I long to return. But this time as an official architecture student. I want to enter again, but now to pause, to breathe, to feel the breeze, the silence, the souls, the mystery, the calm. To sit and draw its cannons, its walls that, despite time, remain standing — resisting time and collective memory.

A small part of the magic that happens when your perspective shifts, when your way of seeing the world changes, and you begin to truly observe what surrounds you — to feel and to live the city. It is about being conscious of life, of history. It is about preserving a monument.

It feels fascinating to be able to write about my city and, in this particular piece, about the Casa Fuerte. To tell its story and reveal it through my words.

¿Alguna vez te has parado a observar tu ciudad? A prestar atención, a cerrar tus ojos por unos segundos, sentir la brisa, mirar las casas, las calles, los edificios.

Hoy, te llevaré a recorrer las calles de Barcelona, Anzoátegui, Venezuela, y te hablaré sobre 3 sitios que captan mucho mi atención: la Casa Fuerte, la Ermita del Carmen y el Teatro Cajigal.

Son tres lugares que en mi opinión son emblemáticos. Cuentan historias, tragedias, momentos, memorias de los siglos XVIII y XIX. Y no, esto no es un artículo o una crónica donde hablaré netamente de historia, no. Es un viaje donde verás a través de mis ojos, donde sentirás los espacios y, muy probablemente, sientas la magia de las calles de Barcelona.

Cuando caminamos por la ciudad, no solemos prestar atención a los alrededores. Estamos tan centrados en nuestro mundo — en el teléfono, en nuestros problemas o simplemente pensando en llegar a nuestro destino —.

Esto solía pasarme mucho a mí. Hasta que tomé la decisión de estudiar arquitectura y, curiosamente, en una de mis idas al gimnasio — que queda en el centro de Barcelona — comencé a prestar atención a lo que me rodeaba: desde la subida al carrito hasta detenerme a observar lo que pasaba.

Una vez que comencé a observar de verdad, todo cambió. Pero no fue un cambio repentino; fue algo que se iba formando. Mi visión, poco a poco, iba transformándose. Y es que, a medida que profundizaba en mis estudios de arquitectura, comenzaba a ser más consciente de lo que sucedía: de las construcciones, de las casas, de las calles.

A medida que pasaban los días en mis idas al gimnasio, había un lugar que captaba mi atención, pero no me atrevía a detenerme. Un sitio que la gente suele ver de lejos; a veces incluso pasarle por al lado y simplemente decir que es un lugar de tragedia, un cementerio.

Realmente llegué a ser de esas personas. Nunca me detuve como tal a pensar, a observar y a detallar más allá. Pero el cambio llegó. Comencé caminando lo más cerca posible; me detenía o caminaba más lento, observaba desde afuera, pero no entraba. Hasta que un día me acerqué a preguntar y descubrí que hacían recorridos donde contaban su historia.

Sin embargo, no me atreví a hacer el recorrido. Sentí que no era el momento y deseaba tomarme mi tiempo para explorarlo, para escuchar las voces de las personas adentro. Pero antes de contarte más, permíteme contarte un poco sobre este lugar tan imponente desde mi punto de vista.

El lugar que es nuestra primera parada en esta aventura por mi ciudad: la Casa Fuerte.

Antes de ser conocida con este nombre, comenzó siendo un convento franciscano del siglo XVIII. Fue durante la guerra de independencia de Venezuela que el libertador Simón Bolívar lo designó como centro de operaciones y mandó a fortificarlo, recibiendo así su nombre de Casa Fuerte.

El 7 de abril de 1817 ocurrió la “Hecatombe de la Casa Fuerte”: fue un ataque donde perecieron aproximadamente 3500 personas, según crónicas locales, 1600 según los registros oficiales — entre ellos, mujeres, niños y ancianos —.

Un breve resumen para todo lo ocurrido dentro y fuera de esos muros. Mi mente no puede imaginar semejante tragedia; el sentir de las almas que dieron su vida defendiendo el convento.

Y es bastante curioso que, una vez que entras, te invade una paz y un silencio donde solo se escucha el sonido de los pájaros y la brisa entre los árboles. Es como si todo fuera de este lugar desapareciera, con el ruido de la ciudad al rededor difuminándose en la distancia.

Puedes preguntarte cómo es posible sentir todo esto, y es que no pasó mucho desde que pregunté sobre los recorridos; y me atreví a entrar. El cambio de escenario no fue normal. Es una sensación de tranquilidad y, al mismo tiempo, puedes sentir las voces de las almas que aún están en este lugar.

Es poder ver los muros, el suelo, la capilla donde se realizaban misas, la habitación donde Simón Bolívar escribía sus cartas, el lugar donde le dispararon a Eulalia Buroz.

Un lugar que suele pasar desapercibido, donde afuera se refugian del sol inclemente peatones y vendedores ambulantes, y dentro yacen ruinas, historia, muros destrozados, tragedia. Pero una vez estás dentro, sientes calma. Y una vez termina el recorrido, no deseas irte — por lo menos a mí me pasó así —.

Anhelo regresar. Pero esta vez siendo oficialmente estudiante de arquitectura. Deseo entrar otra vez, pero ahora poder detenerme, respirar, sentir la brisa, el silencio, las almas, el misterio, la calma. Poder sentarme a dibujar sus cañones, sus muros que, a pesar del tiempo, siguen en pie, resistiendo el tiempo, la memoria colectiva.

Una pequeña parte de la magia que ocurre cuando cambia tu perspectiva, tu mirada del mundo, y comienzas a observar lo que te rodea; a sentir y poder vivir la ciudad. Es ser consciente de la vida, de la historia. Es preservar un monumento.

Resulta fascinante poder escribir sobre mi ciudad y, en esta pieza en especial, sobre la Casa Fuerte. Poder contarla y mostrarla a través de mis palabras.

You might be wondering: how’s a day in the life of an architecture student? Maybe you are one, or already a professional, but this journey is quite interesting because this is not just an article or storytelling; this is art in its whole expression. It’s a different perspective, a new vanishing point. A vision through a frame where you explore spaces, natural light, ergonomic design, ventilation, and even mental health.

Let me ask you these questions: how does architecture breathe through us? How do we live it? Are we conscious enough about it?

As an architecture student myself, everything begins at 6:30 am, sometimes a few minutes later, because my bed is too comfy. But the first thing I do is say hi to my dog, who immediately wakes me up with a smile on my face. I thank God for a new day and for feeling well rested. I drink some water, then head directly to the kitchen; however, what catches my attention is the sunlight bathing the living room through the windows — here is where my breath falters and I smile. Everything stops, even before the thought of making coffee and taking my dog for a walk hits.

Then, I finally arrive at the kitchen. My house is basically designed with an open concept; there aren’t doors or walls separating the spaces. Here, the kitchen is spacious, with warm colors, wood, and granite, designed at the right height for comfort. The lighting fills the whole kitchen and it’s amazing. I drink some water and then start the coffee maker with the right amount of water and coffee for my parents and me. I grab a bag, put the leash on my dog, and we head out.

But here comes my favorite part of the day: imagine watching the sunrise every single day. Beautiful colors, some clouds, and the sunlight illuminating the houses on the street — everything is quiet except for the birds singing. Sometimes there are neighbors talking.

I don’t even have to look up at the sky to start smiling; just seeing the color reflecting on the pavement and I’m already saying hello in Thai and feeling grateful to be able to see this. After this little ritual, I start walking with my dog. I usually pay attention to my surroundings.

Something that I like to do, and have been doing for quite a while, is touching the walls I see; I love feeling the materials, whether it’s brick, stone, or even cement. It’s a moment, a connection. Have you also done this before?

Architecture has given me the structure, the ability to pay attention to my surroundings, to stop for a minute and truly watch everything that’s happening. To see the city, the structures, the buildings. Thinking about the things that can be done better, that we can improve; thinking about the people, function, and future.

Sometimes I think about all of this while walking my dog. I then go back to the house and grab a cup of coffee. I really love how everything is designed, because even the mug is perfect. You might believe that ergonomic design is just something you see in an office, but no. It is about how we feel and interact with space, how everything fits.

In my case, a space in my house that feels perfect is the living room; every piece of furniture fits — the table, the TV, the sofas, the lighting, the colors: greens, oranges, brown, even black. It’s harmonious. This design makes me feel calm.

These types of spaces help with mental health. I even play sometimes with my imagination, improving not just my living room, but the kitchen and everything else. Some plants here, some lamps there — but not just any lamp, no. Maybe some rattan lamps hanging, some more pictures, even changing the sofas and the rest of the furniture.

And when it comes to ventilation, I would change the windows, make them bigger, even add a roof outside to help with the heat.

I believe this is one of the best parts of being an architecture student; you get to play, to imagine, and, if you have the possibilities, change your own house, every space.

This is just a bit of my own experience from the moment I wake up until I get my first cup of coffee. I could continue, but I would just describe every single room and space in my house — and I think that would work for another time. Here, the main goal is playing with some concepts without even realizing it. Seeing how architecture plays an important role in life, sometimes without us paying attention at all. But when you truly look, when you stop and take a minute to breathe deeply, everything changes.

Magic happens — just as it happens to me every morning.

Hegel’s philosophy is something I understand now, and I can identify thoughts and ideas.

He believed in something he called “Geist” or spirit if we take it to English. This also works in Spanish or other languages, I believe. Quite interesting, actually.

I actually believe in what he proposed; however, I have some opinions about it.

He divided architecture in 3 periods: symbolic. classical and romantic.

In the first one, we travel to ancient Egypt, we go to the pyramids, and he thought that this spirit is something that goes beyond, something that connects us as people, feelings, not just materials or structures.

Something I agree with is that in that epoch, everything was truly connected with the earth, because it is not fully developed, not ornamental, it just exists. If we take the pyramids as an example, they are huge, imposing structures. and he believed they weren’t beautiful.

Here’s my take: maybe when it comes to the visual, he didn’t find them “beautiful”, but, the way I see it, in the present time, we believe they are beautiful indeed, and as I mentioned, imposing. I believe that more than structures, they serve to remind us of a distant past, respect for a culture, respect to death and to the kings that ruled a long time ago, and that remains today. And that’s why I believe they are beautiful.

Maybe there’s where the concept of spirit might come in; because it’s the way a feeling or sensation connects millions of people around the world when it comes to the pyramids.

I wonder how you feel about this. It’s interesting, isn’t it?

Now, our journey takes us to ancient Greece, where the temples surround our vision, where the gods from the Olympus receive us. And we stop to think and to feel, to truly look up. something that we don’t usually do in real life.

I believe this is a tour through a few eras and feelings. Questioning everything and thinking not only about structures, but feelings.

In this period, Hegel talked about classical architecture, the middle of everything. He believed this was a fusion between forms and function. I actually remember Alberti and the columns.

This is where everything takes form. Here the spirit is fully conscious. Connected. The stone is still rooted to earth, but with a form, a feeling, a sensation. Where the gods were praised. This is not necessarily religious. But something with a soul. With intention.

Here, we have columns, the Classical Orders: Doric, Ionic and Corinthian; even the Romans adopted these Greek orders and used them as decorative elements more than a strict structural system; like Tuscan Doric and Composite columns.

I believe that’s why Hegel said this was the full concept of beauty. Interesting.

But this is not the end. This tour goes now to the gothic cathedrals; To a romantic period. Here everything is deeper, intricate, complicated when it comes to architecture and forms and structures.

While Hegel believed that the spirit was diluted because of this kind of construction, I think the following:

In this gothic period, everything was used to scare people, to make them believe they were inferior, useless, unless they believed. This architecture was considered by Hegel as excessive, in my own words, of course; but I tend to analyze and go deeper.

Let me take you to Thailand and to a different period. Let’s explore Wat Arun or the Temple of Dawn; here we have a complicated structure, but at the same time, relaxing, inviting you to connect with yourself, to stop thinking, to breathe and to believe that no matter what you’re going through, there’s hope, and the light will always illuminate your life, your thoughts, your pieces or fragments.

This is the opposite to the gothic. Where everything is deeper and scary.

Here, at Wat Arun, the architecture is different, rooted, deep and introspective.

So how do we connect all of this?

Hegel’s final thought was that everything was evolving into something abstract, where the spirit wasn’t present at all, and I actually don’t differ, but then again, I have my own opinions.

He talked about the end of art. However, maybe the spirit, or this connection to the world, the earth, the structures, never left, but evolved into something deeper, different. Because maybe each person has their own opinion, their way to see life through their own lens, their own passion and feeling.

For a long time, I was taught and believed that everything had a structure and a rigid path. A set of fixed rules, technical keywords, and technical manuals.

But as I look at the world—and specifically at the colossal, curved structures that move my soul—I realize that the most powerful thing isn’t the one that stands the stiffest, but the one that knows how to flow.
